The sweet smell of cedar shingles...

What you see is my day's work. I started installing cedar shingles on the kitchen gable end at 8:30am and finished at 4:30pm with a half hour lunch break. Point being... it's slow, painstaking work. Especially in the corners where each shingle must be measured and cut to size. But I enjoyed it! The smell is indeed wonderful and I am so happy to be covering up the white Tyvek! Tomorrow morning I'll finish this section and move on...

Look close at this pic and you'll see my  robin's nest preventer device sitting on top of the "lookout". It's just a scrap of plywood with lots of nails sticking through it. This year we had three robins nesting on these lookouts and we only have four of them. So hopefully this will encourage them to seek other nesting sites!

  1. what's wrong with nesting robins in your gables?

  2. The distinctive beauty of cedar shingles never fails to delight our houses. Aside from its appealing looks, that material is so durable that can resist insects, and the worst elemental damage. A combination of aesthetics and durability: That is truly a must, considering the today’s economic situation; we can’t afford to keep paying for maintenance and repairs. As much as possible, we would want to get more for our money.

  3. Nice! Cedar shingles are also good insulators. It helps the house to keep warm during winter and cool during summer. Also, when it comes to strength and durability, they are wind resistant and resilient to earthquakes.

  4. Not only are they sweet; they’re warm too! As Santo has mentioned already, they’re good insulators. Have you always preferred cedars? It’s not surprising at all, if you have. :D Their color and texture just blend beautifully in any natural environment, just like yours. You’re doing great with it, by the way!

  5. Cedar shingles are such a unique way of making a home really stand out. The aroma they give off is so relaxing and homey. One almost wishes they had a reason to install them indoors as well! Their distinctive bright color really makes them pop, so that you’d know from afar that they are cedar shingles. You spent a long time putting up your shingles, but in the end, it was worth it because you’ve created a beautiful façade.

  6. Santo is right! Cedar serves as a natural insulator! Less heat is transported through the wood that’s why it keeps the cool air from escaping during the summer and the heat from escaping during the winter. Well, a lot of people choose cedar mainly because of its style. I, personally, love it because it seems to give my home a more natural look, and it blends in well with the surroundings. Well, our house is surrounded with trees and vegetation, so it’s just really perfect to have such kind of roof! :)

  7. Yeah, cedar roof really looks beautiful, and if you’re an environmentally conscious type of person, you’ll definitely consider having one because it’s one of the best, greenest roofing products available today. A cedar roof provides strong insulation for your house, which in turn lets you save on your electric bills. Likewise, it is also a renewable and biodegradable material. Unlike other roofing materials, it can be recycled after it has reached its maximum lifespan. :)
